Zinc – PMT and Mental Health

Zinc, PMT, and Mental Health Issues

Strangely enough, your copper levels (if you’re a woman) rise quite significantly just before your period and are linked to PMT symptoms such as tension, depression, anger, and unease.

High copper levels have also been associated with schizophrenia and other mental health issues, such as anorexia and obsessive compulsive disorder, with some people finding that their condition improves with simple zinc supplementation (clearly this is not something to try at home without medical assistance – stay on your meds people!).

Dyslexia, hyperactivity, poor memory, lethargy, and irritability are also deficiency signs so all you students out there might be in need of a zinc boost come finals time!

If you suffer from PMT though, it might be worth trying a zinc supplement to the tune of about 15mg/day in the three or four days leading up to your period to see if that stops the crazymaking that you might suffer.
