Cruelty-Free Victoria: An Ugly Anachronism

by L Matthews on September 10, 2010

First order of business, as I’m moving to Victoria, BC, very soon, is the outdated and cruel use of horse-drawn carriages in the city.

There have been many accidents where horses have been spooked, bolted, and dragged their fellow horses along. Many have been injured to the point of being euthanised.

The brilliant Friends of Animals in Victoria, and the Victoria Vegan group have been campaigning on the issue for a while and I look forward to getting involved in the struggle with them when I relocate in October. For now, visit their site at http://blog.thevictoriavegan.com/2010/07/monday-night-carriage-accident-on.html to read about a horrific accident earlier this year.

There you’ll also find links to the facebook group and online petitions http://thevictoriavegan.com/foa/. Why is it that most people see these anachronisms as contributing to the city’s historic character, rather than an ugly reminder of our history of animal abuse, cruelty, and disrespect?

Good looking blog. I visited Victoria and loved the horses, but this ahs made me think again about them being used in this way – I’m vegetarian but never rerally considered this as animal cruelty, I guess it is. Thanks for putting this post up, hopefully otehrs will notice is too.
